Tropical Travel Tips

The islands of French Polynesia are built on tourism, so visitor needs are generally well catered for.

Thousands of visitors go to French Polynesia annually, without incident.

But the common sense you apply in day to day living should be applied when on holiday in a strange land.

Natural hazards may be your main concern. We suggest:

* Wear lycra suits when swimming to avoid sunburn and marine stingers
* Do not wade near coral or rock outcrops as stonefish may be present
* Do not snorkel near the reef lagoon channels where strong currents exist
* Do not handle marine wildlife, especially shellfish
* Do not do anything silly – you are not in an area with big-city medical facilities
* Don’t go alone in the dark anywhere – this is a universal problem, not a French Polynesian problem
